BOSTON — After Northeastern’s 4-0 win over Boston University on Friday night, the Terriers bounced back with a 4-0 victory of their own Saturday in front of a home crowd at Agganis Arena.
While the Huskies thwarted six Terrier power plays, BU’s frequent five-on-four advantages — which totaled over 10 minutes — kept Northeastern from generating scoring opportunities.
Freshman Lisa Jönsson made her collegiate debut protecting Northeastern’s net. Under five minutes into the first period, BU forward Lola Reid took advantage of an open left corner and scored the first goal of the game.
However, Jönsson quickly adjusted and kept the Terriers scoreless for the remainder of the first period and the entire second. On the other end, BU netminder Callie Shanahan—bouncing back from a rough Friday performance where she allowed three Husky goals in the first two periods—saved all 25 shots she faced, recording BU’s first shutout of Northeastern since 2010.
“It was an awesome rebound for Callie,” said BU head coach Tara Watchorn. “She’s been playing great for us. I know yesterday wasn’t the night she wanted. This speaks to her ability to reset and give us a chance to win.”
Northeastern had three power plays to work with, but for much of their five-on-four advantage, BU commanded the puck in the Huskies’ attacking zone. Moreover, the Terrier defense locked down Northeastern’s top lines, particularly freshman Éloïse Caron, after her two-goal night on Friday.
In the series, both teams went a combined 0-for-20 on the power play, reflecting the defensive strength of the cross-town rivals. Despite Northeastern’s flawless penalty kills, two separate BU power plays in the third period alone hindered the Huskies’ abilities to apply offensive pressure.
Following forward Riley Walsh’s goal seven minutes into the third period, Jönsson locked down the net for 10 minutes, before Northeastern head coach Dave Flint pulled her for an extra skater. BU took advantage and scored two empty net goals to solidify the 4-0 win.
“We just reset,” Watchorn said when asked about the difference in the Terriers’ performance compared to Friday. “We talked about the different strategies and were more responsible with the puck.”
The Huskies are back in action Friday, Oct. 18 at Holy Cross. WRBB will have full coverage from Luke Graham, with puck drop set for 6 p.m.
