BOSTON — After a 4-0 win against Providence the day before, Northeastern kept their young season undefeated with a 6-1 win in a game that was all but decided by the second period.

Coming into the afternoon, it was clear that RPI and Northeastern were on opposite ends of the college hockey spectrum, with Northeastern undefeated at 3-0 and RPI entering at 1-5 after losses against Minnesota State (0-2), Holy Cross (1-1), and Sacred Heart (0-2).

In net, the Huskies turned to true freshman Renna Trembecky from Sherwood Park, Alberta in her first collegiate start.

Northeastern struck first with a power play goal from senior right-winger Holly Abela on a centering pass from freshman Stryker Zablocki. RPI quickly responded thirty seconds later with leading scorer Charlotte Wensley scoring on a goal that came out of a scrum in front of the net.

“I thought from start to finish, [Trembecky] was rock solid…  she had an outstanding start for her first career game,” said associate head coach Nick Carpentino. On the lone goal allowed, Carpentino added, “We left her hung out to dry. We told our team before the game [that] RPI wants to get pucks to the net, so we need to do a good job picking up sticks, and that’s not something we did for that goal.”

After allowing the goal from RPI, it was no looking back for the Huskies. Jaden Bogden and Tuva Kandell later scored their first goals of the season in the opening period, with Bogden scoring top shelf on a centering pass from Lily Shannon.

The second period saw more of the same, with Shannon scoring a goal of her own from another Zablocki centering pass and assisting on Bogden’s second goal that came off a rebound from RPI goalie Reese Keating.

Bogden praised both Zablocki’s and Shannon’s play after the game, “Stryker’s just an easy player to mesh with well. She moves up and down the ice really well. She passes when the lanes are there, and [with] both of them combined, I think we’re a great line together.”

Sophomore Morgan Jackson scored her third goal of the season in the first four games, on a puck that was misplayed by RPI goalie Reese Keating and given to Jackson with an empty net right in front of her.

Northeastern’s control on possession was evident throughout, outshooting RPI 32-12. The one-sided shot total gave Trembecky a comfortable game in net in her first collegiate start as the presumed backup goalie behind sophomore Lisa Jönsson.

Looking ahead, the Huskies will have big games ahead that will be an early test, playing top-15 rivals Quinnipiac and Boston University over the next two weekends.

“I think the team’s ready for what they can bring because we’re rolling off a high right now,” Bogden said. “Everything’s going really well for us, so [we’re] using that to the best of our abilities to carry us through next weekend and hope to knot two wins.”

The Huskies travel to Hamden, Connecticut next Friday to play the Quinnipiac Bobcats. WRBB will have coverage on our website.
