ALLSTON — On Commonwealth Avenue, 15 minutes by bus from their home, Matthews Arena, Northeastern both simultaneously wildly disappointed and miraculously impressed their traveled fans. In the end, they fell 4-3 in overtime to their rival Terriers, but in true Northeastern vs. BU fashion, they did so in the most baffling of ways.

Through the first 50 minutes of play, the Huskies were outscored, outshot, and outplayed — for all intents and purposes, they were completely dominated by BU. Their play was so lackluster, in fact, that it was more reminiscent of the 2024-25 team that constantly underwhelmed rather than the 12th ranked 2025-26 squad that fans have become accustomed to watching.

However, propelled by another near-stellar, 43-save performance from sophomore goaltender Quentin Sigurdson, Northeastern somehow turned what was arguably their worst game of the season into an almost perfect comeback story.

There is an old adage in sports journalism: “You don’t even need to begin writing until the final stanza.” Never have the Huskies made that statement more true than Saturday night.

Until junior Dylan Hryckowian found the back of the net to make it a 3-2 game with less than 10 minutes to go, frankly, nothing was going well for Northeastern. BU had controlled every aspect of the game, and even in the few opportunities the Huskies did have throughout the game, they could not capitalize.

Yet unimaginably, they were just a goal down after Hryckowian scored.

Although it was late in the game and generating offense seemed to be a near impossible task, the goal gave Northeastern the spark they had lacked — just enough to make it interesting. With 61 seconds remaining, the puck found Hryckowian’s blade again; the game was tied.

“[We could’ve] easily been down and out, [and] just say, ‘hey, it’s not our night,’” said Northeastern head coach Jerry Keefe after the game. “We didn’t do that, so that shows the character in the room. Obviously, we’re not happy about the first 40 minutes, but to go out and come back down two goals on the road to get a point, that’s huge.”

In the end, Cole Hutson took advantage of an error by senior captain Vinny Borgesi to score his second of the night and end it with a breakaway, but the Huskies did show an immense amount of “character” to comeback when they were, let’s face it, largely “down and out.”

With the loss, No. 12 Northeastern falls to an overall record of 8-4 (4-3 in Hockey East, tied for 3rd place), and BU improves to 6-7-1 (6th in Hockey East). Northeastern next takes the ice Saturday, Nov. 29, at 4:00 PM, when they host Brown. That senior night matchup from Matthews will be broadcast live on WRBB Sports with Luke Graham and Zeno Minotti on the call.
