Northeastern received a commitment last week from ’97 forward Austin Goldstein, recently graduated from Malden Catholic (MA). Goldstein, listed at 5-foot-8, 160 lbs, put up a total stat line of 14-28-42 in 58 games played throughout three varsity seasons, going out with a bang his senior season with a 10-14-24 line. Teammates with 2016 NU commit Matt Filipe, Goldstein won both a state and Super 8 title with MC. He is the third player with ties to the Lancers’ that NU has roped in, joining Filipe and current junior forward Brendan Collier. Goldstein is committed for the 2017-18 season, and will play with the Middlesex Islanders of the United States Premier Hockey League next season.
I had the chance to speak with Mark Bilotta of “OverTheBoards“, one of the premier hockey recruitment websites, about Goldstein. Bilotta said Goldstein was a “slippery 97 F who changes up his stride and posture to keep defenses off balance. Had a nice showing at Road to College in June.”
Thanks to the glory of Twitter, I also was able to speak to Austin himself and ask some questions about his recruitment process and his decision to commit to Northeastern:
Mike Davis: What appealed to you about NU as a school and as a program?
Austin Goldstein: “I grew up going to the Beanpot and living just 15 minutes from Boston. Being close to home, while also studying in the co-op business program and playing college hockey is everything I want in one package.”
MD: What are your plans for the upcoming season? Back to MC?
AG: “Sadly, I graduated from MC this past spring. I will be playing for the Islanders Hockey Club in the USPHL and taking a class or two a semester.”
MD: What schools were you considering other than NU?
AG: “I had other interest from ECAC and Atlantic schools, along with D3 schools. Once I visited Northeastern it just felt right to me.”
MD: How would you describe yourself as a player?
AG: “I am a smaller forward who relies on my speed to cause turnovers and create plays. I compete hard every shift and play a complete game.”
MD: When will you be enrolling at NU?
AG: “As of now I am set to come in for the 2017-18 season, there is a possibility of moving up a year, but I am committed for 2017-18.”
Congratulations to Austin on his commitment to Northeastern. Follow him on Twitter at @agoldie_7 and follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @NUDogHouse for up-to-date information for the upcoming season.
