It looked as though the Northeastern Huskies were on the brink of dropping their first game of the new season, trailing Quinnipiac 2-1 with under a minute to play in regulation.
That was, until Nolan Stevens placed the puck in the back of the net off a Dylan Sikura shot from the blue line to knot the score up at two just before time expired. Neither team was able to muster a goal in the overtime period, and what was a hard-fought game on both sides ended in a stalemate.
“We came in here knowing it was going to be a hard game,” Northeastern head coach Jim Madigan said following the game. “They’re a heavy team. They’re obviously a team who’s very seasoned, veteran, and used to playing in close tight games. They’ve been in the national championship game last year, and the tournament the last few years, so we were expecting a heavy game and I liked the way our kids came out and competed.”
Although the Huskies outshot the Bobcats for the second straight night in Game 2 of the weekend series, Quinnipiac capitalized on more of their chances around the net, giving them a 5-2 victory.
Quinnipiac netted the first three goals within the first 30 minutes of the game and never looked back. A goal on the power play from Zach Aston-Reese brought the Huskies back within two, but the Huskies weren’t able to complete the comeback as QU’s Tim Clifton scored his second goal of the game to seal the deal late in regulation.

Women’s Ice Hockey
Oct. 7 — Northeastern picked up its first win of the season on Friday night, defeating Lindenwood 5-0 at Lindenwood Ice Arena. Junior Denisa Krizova scored two goals and sophomore Brittany Bugalski recorded a 10-save shutout in net.
Oct. 8 – The Huskies completed the weekend series sweep with a 4-1 win over Lindenwood on Saturday night. Junior McKenna Brand and freshman Matti Hartman each recorded an assist to lead NU to their second win (2-2-0).
The Lady Huskies return to Matthews Arena for a pair of home games against Syracuse University, starting on Friday at 7 p.m.
Men’s Cross Country
Oct. 8 — The Northeastern men’s cross country team took first place at the New England Championships in Franklin Park on Saturday. The Huskies placed all of their five scorers in the top 50 in an 8k race that had over 200 runners in the field. Paul Duffey took 12th and Christian Stafford took 14th with times of 25:08.91 and 25:10.52, respectively.
Women’s Cross Country
Oct. 8 – On the women’s side, Jordan O’Dea’s second place finish in the 5k (17:43.88) led the Huskies to a fourth place finish on Saturday. Lucy Young finished 15th with a time of 18:17.19.
Duffey and O’Dea each earned the CAA Runner of the Week award.
Both Huskies squads will next compete in the Central Connecticut State mini meet on Oct. 21.
Women’s Field Hockey
Oct. 7 – The Huskies fell 3-2 to James Madison on Friday night at Dedham field despite sophomore June Curry-Lindahl’s two first half goals, including one with just five seconds left in the period. Miranda Rigg of JMU scored the game’s deciding goal in the 38th minute of play.
Oct. 9 – Northeastern dropped their second game of the weekend to William & Mary on a rainy, bitter Sunday at Dedham Field. The Tribe went up 3-0, but a late goal from Jessica Unger (4) ruined William & Mary’s shutout bid.
The Huskies (6-7) will play two more games next weekend – one against CAA foe Hofstra on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., and the other against UMass on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. — both in Hempstead, N.Y.
Men’s Soccer
Oct. 4. – Sophomore Martin Nygaard’s 65th-minute goal was all the Huskies needed to defeat Hartford 1-0 on Tuesday. Junior Jonathan Thuresson recorded four saves and Northeastern earned their third clean sheet of the season.
Oct. 8 – This time, the Northeastern men found themselves on the other end of a 1-0 game, dropping Saturday night’s game against Elon at Parsons Field, despite tallying 16 shots. Jack Willbye scored the lone goal for the Phoenix.
Next up, Northeastern (3-9-0, 1-4-0 CAA) will travel to CAA foe James Madison on Oct. 15 for a 1 p.m. afternoon kickoff.
Women’s Soccer
Oct. 7 – The Huskies scored three straight goals to overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit against William & Mary in overtime at Parsons Field. Sophomore Hannah Rosenblatt, who was named CAA player of the week on Monday, scored two goals within two minutes of each to start the second half, and senior Carina Deandreis’ overtime goal from 20 yards out sealed the deal for NU.
Oct. 9 – Mackenzie Dowd, Kayla Cappuzzo and Hannah Rosenblatt each scored and keeper Nathalie Nidetch recorded a clean sheet as the Huskies defeated Elon 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. Northeastern improves to 7-0-0 on the season when scoring two goals or more.
Next weekend, the Huskies (10-5-1, 5-1-0 CAA) will head back on the road to play Hofstra at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.
Women’s Rowing
In the team’s first action of the season, the Northeastern women’s rowing team took fifth overall in the varsity eight race at the Head of the Housatonic on Saturday morning. Haley Doucette led the Huskies with her time of 14:21.7 on the 2.7-mile course.
The Huskies next compete in the 2016 Head of the Charles Regatta, which will take place on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23.
Women’s Volleyball
Northeastern’s volleyball team completed a weekend sweep with wins over Elon (3-2) on Friday, Towson (3-2) on Saturday and Delaware (3-0) on Monday. The Huskies improve to 16-5 overall (6-1 in the CAA) and remain undefeated at home.
The team will play its next match on Saturday afternoon against the Hofstra Pride at the Cabot Center, starting at 4 p.m.
