On a night where sophomore Mattie Robitzer made her first career start in net for Northeastern, the team couldn’t find a way to break past Providence for more than seconds at a time, and ultimately fell 5-1.
Photographer Jacob Oshinsky traveled to Schneider Arena for the game between the Huskies and Friars, and has more images from the defeat.
In the first, the Huskies allowed three quick goals after a dominant showing from Providence in the opening minutes. In response, Northeastern mustered just six shots on goal, and skated to the locker room down by a trio.
The visiting team followed that up with a solid second period, firing off 14 shots on goal though none found the back of the net.
In the third period, things began to devolve, with multiple penalties and another Providence goal scored courtesy of junior star Reichen Kirchmair.
A late review in the last five minutes of regulation led to Providence forward Audrey Knapp getting the gate with five and a game misconduct. On the ensuing major power play, captain Taze Thompson got one back for the Huskies with her sixth of the season and the fourth power play goal for Northeastern over their last five games. A welcome sight after the struggles on the advantage to this point so far.
With Robitzer pulled to make it 6-on-5, the Friars pushed the puck down the ice and into the back of the cage to secure the win with a shorthanded empty netter, making it 5-1. It’s the first time Northeastern has given up five goals in a game since Feb. 17, 2019. Coincidentally, a 5-2 loss to the Friars at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies and Friars will return to action Saturday with the second half of the weekend series this time in Boston. Amelia Ballingall, Armaan Vij, and Emma Sullivan will be on the call at 3 p.m. from Matthews Arena on WRBBSports+.
