BOSTON — After a disappointing loss in its season opener, Northeastern women’s basketball bounced back Friday night, defeating crosstown rival Boston University 71-61 at Case Gym. Despite surrendering an 11-point halftime lead, the Huskies responded with a decisive 15-0 run in the fourth quarter to secure their first victory of the season.
Northeastern entered the matchup looking to bounce back from Monday’s 65-61 loss to UAlbany, while BU was also searching for its first win after falling to Dartmouth. The Huskies also looked to snap a three-game losing streak against the Terriers, having last defeated them in November 2022.
Junior guard Camryn Collins led Northeastern with 16 points and five rebounds, while junior forward Justice Tramble added 12 points. Junior guard Morgan Matthews contributed 11 points, and graduate guard Summer Bostock finished with 10. For BU, sophomore forward Kate Allard led the Terriers with 16 points, followed by freshman guard Sophia Georgiades with 12.
Northeastern started the game strong, with Collins opening the scoring with a three-pointer. BU briefly took an 8-7 lead after junior guard Rose Azmoudeh knocked down back-to-back threes, but the Huskies responded with a 6-0 run to regain the lead. Northeastern maintained its advantage throughout the remainder of the first quarter, taking an 18-16 lead into the second .
The Huskies continued to build their lead in the second quarter, outscoring BU 23-14. Tramble played a significant role offensively, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the first half, and Northeastern also found success from beyond the arc, with senior guard Yirsy Quéliz knocking down a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to give the Huskies a 41-30 lead heading into halftime.

However, the Terriers began to fight back in the third quarter, outscoring Northeastern 23-15, taking advantage of improved three-point shooting to cut into the deficit. Georgiades helped lead the comeback, scoring five points during a late 7-0 run that brought BU within one. Sophomore guard Kailee Beaudion-Foliaki responded with a layup in the final seconds, allowing Northeastern to maintain a narrow 56-53 lead entering the fourth.
BU completed its comeback early in the final quarter when junior guard Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir converted a layup to give the Terriers a 57-56 lead with just under eight minutes remaining. However, the Huskies quickly regained control, responding with 15 unanswered points.
Collins put Northeastern back ahead with a layup before adding two free throws. Matthews then scored five consecutive points, including a three-pointer, while graduate guard Anja Bukvic added back-to-back layups. The Huskies continued their unanswered run, eventually extending their lead to 71-57 with just over a minute remaining.
The Terriers went ice cold from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter, missing all nine of their three-point attempts. After shooting 42.9% from three through the first three quarters, BU struggled to find its rhythm when it mattered the most. The Terriers also went more than seven minutes without scoring, allowing Northeastern to take control and pull away for the victory.
Following the game, Northeastern head coach Priscilla Edwards-Lloyd credited her team’s confidence and ability to learn from its previous loss.
“I just really think they believed in that moment”, Edwards-Lloyd said. “We were in the same situation just a couple days ago, and we talked about ways to be better when it gets late in a close game.”
She also highlighted the defensive adjustments that helped Northeastern regain control.
“There was just a switch,” Edwards-Lloyd said. “They knew they could get stops, they could lock in and defend.”
Northeastern finished the game shooting 51.8% from the field, a significant improvement from its 32.3% performance against UAlbany. The Huskies also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Terriers 34-21, including a 13-6 advantage on the offensive end.
Beyond its leading scorers, Northeastern received important contributions from its bench. Junior forward Maya Summerville recorded a career-high six assists and four rebounds, while Beaudion-Foliaki added eight points and six rebounds.

Edwards-Lloyd highlighted the contributions of several players when asked who stood out in the victory.
“I thought Maya [Summerville] came in and gave us great minutes. She had six assists for us,” Edwards-Lloyd said. “I thought Morgan [Matthews] played some really good defense.”
Edwards-Lloyd also praised the team’s depth, noting that several players stepped up and provided important minutes off the bench.
With the victory, Northeastern improved to 1-1 on the season, while BU fell to 0-2. The win also marked the Huskies’ first victory over their crosstown rivals in four years.
Despite snapping that losing streak, Edwards-Lloyd emphasized the importance of the result beyond the opponent.
“A win is a win. I don’t care if it was BU, UB, ABC,” Edwards-Lloyd said. “I’m just glad that we played well and executed, and we got a good road win.”
Northeastern will look to build on its first victory when they travel to face Sacred Heart on Wednesday, Nov.11, at 7 p.m.
